Every night when Finn the black Labrador retriever goes to bed, the Boy whispers to him, “A Lab’s ears are made of SILK.”
Until one night he doesn’t. What could be wrong? Finn is distraught. Trying to impress, he retrieves the Boy’s shoes, inadvertently chewing them into pieces, making the Boy’s parents extremely unhappy. The Boy, meanwhile, seems more interested in talking to a girl than petting poor Finn.
Surrounded by friends and enemies, Finn searches for the truth: are his ears really made of SILK, and if so, does that give him worth?

Trying to impress, he retrieves the Boy’s shoes, inadvertently chewing them into pieces, making the Boy’s parents extremely unhappy. The Boy, meanwhile, seems more interested in talking to a girl than petting poor Finn. So the Lab runs away, intent on finding out if what the Boy used to whisper to him is true.
During his Great Journey, he encounters a self-righteous guinea pig, a belligerent turtle, some pirate mice, and his best friend Sawyer, the creamy Lab. Finn must be careful though: his archenemy Alley Cat and his gang of stray felines, the Realists, watch his every move. However, Alley Cat may have the answers Finn is looking for, but how could a dog ever trust a cat?
Surrounded by friends and enemies, Finn searches for the truth: are his ears really made of SILK, and if so, does that give him worth?

Dr. Debra Resnick –
Your book has universal themes of separation, abandonment, and one’s self-worth.

How many of you have observed your pet sleeping or just resting and thought, I wonder what he’s dreaming about. Or, do animals really dream? Go on an adventure with Finn and his furry friends along with those animals he thinks are villains. It will spike your imagination!
I think this book is perfect for middle school readers and enjoyable for their parents as well.
Juanita –
I was immediately charmed by the premise of A Lab’s Ears are Made of SILK. The way you’ve captured Finn’s emotional journey his devotion to the Boy, his heartbreak when the nightly whisper stops, and his determination to find the truth creates a story that is both whimsical and deeply moving. The colorful cast of characters he meets along the way, from pirate mice to Alley Cat and the Realists, promises an adventure filled with humor, heart, and just the right touch of tension. It’s the kind of story middle-grade readers will treasure, and one parents will enjoy reading right alongside them.
Your long history as a writer, musician, and publisher, combined with your evident love for Labradors, makes this book feel especially personal and authentic. That warmth and creativity, grounded in your own experiences, shines through and makes Finn’s journey resonate even more.
Because of its heart, originality, and emotional depth, I believe A Lab’s Ears are Made of SILK deserves wide visibility when it launches.
